Types of String Instruments

The orchestral string family has four members: the violin, viola, cello and double bass. They share the same basic design, a carved wooden body, four strings and a bow, but differ in size, range and role. Here is how they compare.

Violin

The smallest and highest-pitched string instrument, tuned G-D-A-E. It carries the melody in most orchestral music and is the most common first instrument for young students. Sizes run from 1/32 for the youngest players to full-size 4/4, and Franz Hoffmann® Amadeus violins start at $299. Shop violins.

Viola

Slightly larger than the violin and tuned a fifth lower, to C-G-D-A, with a warmer, darker voice. Violas are sized in inches, from 11" to 16.5", and reading alto clef is part of learning it. Beginner violas start at $379. Shop violas.

Cello

Played seated, with the instrument resting on an endpin. Tuned C-G-D-A, an octave below the viola, the cello covers both bass lines and singing melodies. Sizes run from 1/10 to full-size 4/4, and beginner cellos start at $1,249. Shop cellos.

Double Bass

The largest and lowest string instrument, also called the upright bass or string bass. It is tuned E-A-D-G in fourths and is played standing or on a tall stool. Most adults play a 3/4 bass, and beginner basses start at $2,349. Shop double basses.

Fiddles and Electric Instruments

A fiddle is a violin set up and played for folk, bluegrass and country music. Electric violins, violas and cellos let you play through an amplifier or practice silently with headphones. Shop fiddles and electric instruments.

How to Choose the Right String Instrument

  • Start with the player: school orchestra programs often assign or recommend an instrument, so check with the teacher first.
  • Get the size right: younger players need fractional sizes. Use our instrument size charts to measure.
  • Choose a complete outfit for beginners: outfits add the bow, case or bag and rosin, so the instrument is ready for the first lesson.
  • Rent if the player is still growing: SharWay rent-to-own and other rental programs keep the first cost low.

String Instrument FAQ

What are the four main string instruments?

The violin, viola, cello and double bass. Together they make up the string section of an orchestra.

Is a fiddle the same as a violin?

Yes. A fiddle is a violin. The difference is the style of music and sometimes the setup, such as a flatter bridge for playing double stops.

Are your instruments ready to play?

Yes. Every instrument we sell is set up by our luthiers before it ships. Instruments, bows and outfits are also covered by our 30-day guarantee and must be in like-new condition to receive a full credit or refund. Outlet, pre-owned and blemished items are final sale. See returns and exchanges for details.
