How to Choose a Cello
Choosing a cello comes down to three things: size, level and budget. Every cello we sell is set up by our luthiers before it ships, so it arrives ready to tune and play.
Cello Sizes: 1/10 to 4/4
Cellos come in fractional sizes so younger players can reach the notes comfortably. Adults and most teens play a full-size 4/4 cello. As a guide, measure the hand span from the tip of the index finger to the tip of the little finger:
- Ages 14 and up, adults (about 4.25" span): 4/4 full size
- Ages 11–13 (about 3.75"): 3/4
- Ages 6–8 (about 3.25"): 1/2
- Ages 5–6 (about 3"): 1/4
- Ages 4–5 (about 2.75"): 1/8
- Ages 3–4 (about 2.5"): 1/10
Between two sizes? Choose the smaller one. See our cello size chart for more detail.

Laminate or Carved?
Beginner cellos come in two constructions. Laminate cellos, such as the Franz Hoffmann® Amadeus Laminate, are durable and a practical choice for school use and young players. Carved cellos, such as the Amadeus Carved and Prelude, are made from solid tonewoods for a fuller, more responsive sound. The Danube and Concert are the step-up models in the Franz Hoffmann® line.
Cello Only, Outfit or Deluxe Outfit?
- Cello only: the instrument without a bow or bag, for players who already have both.
- Outfit: the cello with a bow, padded bag, rosin, endpin anchor and cleaning cloths, ready for the first lesson.
- Deluxe outfit: the outfit plus extra cleaning accessories and practice tools.
Already have a cello? Upgrade with cello strings, cello bows, cello cases, rosin and endpin anchors.
Cello vs. Double Bass
The cello is tuned C-G-D-A, an octave below the viola, and is always played seated. The double bass is larger, tuned E-A-D-G in fourths, and plays the lowest part in the orchestra, often standing or on a stool. Considering the bass? Browse our double basses.

Cello FAQ
How much does a cello cost?
At Shar, beginner cellos start at $1,249, intermediate cellos run about $2,850 to $4,800, advanced cellos about $5,400 to $15,000, and handmade fine cellos start at $9,500.
What size cello does an adult need?
Most adults and teens aged 14 and up play a full-size 4/4 cello. Younger players should be measured, because a cello that is too large makes good posture and intonation harder.
What comes with a cello outfit?
Our Franz Hoffmann® cello outfits include the cello, a bow, a padded bag, rosin, an endpin anchor and cleaning cloths. Deluxe outfits add more accessories and practice tools.
Can I return a cello?
Yes. Instruments, bows and outfits are covered by our 30-day guarantee and must be in like-new condition to receive a full credit or refund. Outlet, pre-owned and blemished items are final sale. See returns and exchanges for details.
