Hill
W.E. Hill & Sons Violin Bow att. to William Johnson, London, c.1905, Tortoiseshell/Gold
REVIEW VIDEOS
This exquisite violin bow represents the pinnacle of English bow-making at the turn of the 20th century, crafted at the W.E. Hill & Sons workshop during its golden era. The bow is attributed to William Grieve Johnston, one of the finest early bowmakers for the W.E. Hill & Sons firm.
The octagonal stick is made of light brown pernambuco cut on the slab, with later darker brown varnish. The frog is light brown tortoiseshell, with gold mounts. It is mounted to the stick in the ordinary fashion. There are diamond shaped inlays in the sides and a ‘half back’ hell plate in gold. The button has a gold ring with Tourte style washer at the collar and a gold cap. The collar is probably of Samuel Allen.
With its distinguished aesthetics and refined playability, this bow not only exemplifies the artistry of Hill’s finest makers but also stands as a singular piece of decorative and historical importance. A true collector's treasure, unmatched in rarity and elegance.
