The Essential Guide to Bows of the Violin Family
by Gabriel Schaff
As bowed string players know, the bow is an essential tool for producing their art. They know that some bows work well with their instrument while others don’t. Those players who have attempted to dive deeper into the world of bows have undoubtedly skimmed some of the major works that describe bows by the great masters to the nth level of detail. For most players who are not also bow makers, these books have limited usefulness because the sheer volume of information is simply overwhelming.
Author Gabriel Schaff has created perhaps the perfect guide if you crave learning “just enough” about bows. The Essential Guide to Bows of the Violin Family covers all the necessary topics, at a pragmatic level of detail, that will help you confidently undertake the journey to find a new bow, care for your current bows, or speak intelligently with your luthier. Lavishly illustrated in the manner of the fine reference work that it is, The Essential Guide to Bows of the Violin Family is also an inspiring book – you may not be able to put it down on your nightstand once you start reading it! And if you find you interest piqued, the comprehensive bibliography at the end of the book will guide you to new vistas.
Gabriel Schaff, a New York City violinist, has dedicated his career to enriching the music community. Beginning his violin studies at age six, and later a scholarship student and assistant of Erick Friedman at the Manhattan School of Music, Mr. Schaff has been active as a performer, teacher, and artistic director ever since. His interest in historic musical instruments, and antiquities in general, combined with his passion and experience as a violinist led to the creation of The Essential Guide to Bows of the Violin Family.
