This is the third instrument I've bought from Shar and I'm pretty disappointed with it. I believe that they sent me a pre-owned instrument, which is absolutely unacceptable. There are 3 chips in the varnish on the top plate, there are marks on the wood near the tail piece and on the bottom plate where it looks like the instrument was dropped or banged into something, the glue between the top plate and the rib near the tail piece has come loose, and the bridge was shifted so far to the left when I got it that the C string was off the finger board. I 100% would have sent it back, but I needed the instrument on short notice, and I can't afford to be without one. I've always recommended Shar to my students, but I won't do so again. I won't be ordering from Shar again Sending someone an obviously used instrument when they paid for a new one is pretty messed up.
Shipped without any protection inside the package. Viola and bow shifted around in transit. Not sure if it comprised viola or not. Disappointing when you spend $$$.
I was suprised by the quality of this instrument for the money. Easily as good as instruments that cost twice as much. The Viola was very playable out of the box. The A string tended to be somewhat finicky. This was fixed by using a Larsen A string. Also I replaced the Bridge because I like a lower playing position. Just personal preference.
These are Chinese made; but Shar must have excellent quality control. I have heard nothing but good things about Franz Hoffman Instruments.
This viola is pretty good for the price, but be warned, the strings are horrible. It will cost a good $100 to replace them. Also, the wood block rosin that comes with this is also not the best. It will only cost $15 or so to replace that though. This causes
the instrument to be a bit more expensive than it is at first glance, but once everything is straightened out, the tone is unbelievable.
First I have to say how amazing the customer service is from the staff at Shar. I was informed that my outfit would be backordered because of a few items but I was extremely pleased to be able to replace some components of the package in order to receive
my package approximately a month earlier than I would have if I had waited. Now about the viola. I ordered this viola outfit in order to get a start on the instrument and I must say that my teacher and I are extremely impressed. The instrument is perfect for
any student that wants a wonderful instrument that will be a pleasure to play. Everything in the description is true and this is most definitely the most impressive instrument on the market for under $400. I would definitely recommend that the strings be replaced
with Pirastro Tonica strings, they ring well and have a very clear tone.
