44 Duets by Béla Bartók
transcribed for two violas by Donald Maurice and Claudine Bigelow
This series was launched in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of Béla Bartók's death. It involves new editions of tried publications as well as several new transcriptions that fulfill every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. The duos range in difficulty from very easy to quite advanced. Bartok's note to the first edition of the 44 duos:
Each of these duos - with the two indicated exceptions - incorporates a peasant melody as the principal theme. They are arranced here in order of progressive difficulty. At a recital, naturally, this order should not be maintained; it would be more to the point if the pieces selected for performance were arranged into one or more (related) series and the pieces within each series played attacca. The few plans below are intended only as examples of such grouping arrangements.
