Thomas Kennedy Cello — London, c.1830
A distinguished English cello by Thomas Kennedy, crafted in London around 1830. Kennedy (1784–1870) is celebrated as one of England’s finest 19th-century makers, renowned for his bold models, excellent tonewoods, and distinctive workmanship that blends Italianate inspiration with British character.
Kennedy cellos have long been favored by professionals and advanced players alike for their power, balance, and uniquely English voice. This fine example would suit the serious cellist or collector seeking an instrument of both historical significance and remarkable playability.
English maker, Thomas Kennedy, was a prolific maker and well known for his cellos. Kennedy opened his own shop in 1813 after apprenticing with John Kennedy, Thomas Powell, and the renowned William Forster III. Kennedy employed some of the most famous English makers of his time including James Brown as well as bowmakers such as Thomas Tubbs and James & Edward Dodd.
