Sonata in D major for Cello and Piano
by Camille Saint-Saens
edited by Denis Hurlin
URTEXT Edition by Barenreiter

This Sonata was recently discovered from Saint-Saens' own manuscript. This is his third and final cello sonata, and the first edition of it ever. This URTEXT edition includes the full piano reduction score and the cello parts together as separate booklet (edited without finger markings), and a scholarly Introduction.

Difficulty: A5-6 (Advanced)

B‰renreiter recently published what they call "Cello Sonata No. 3" by Saint-SaÎns. Their editor presents a very weak case for this work. I find it curious that B‰renreiter charges $25 for an incomplete work (published incomplete) based on rejected sketches
by the composer. How is this a "musician's choice," as B‰renreiter claims their urtext editions to be? The part is not even annotated with fingerings or bowings. A performance edition would be more of the "musician's choice." The editor doesn't even hide that
he is fudging the evidence in the preface by taking Saint-SaÎns's words out of context and changing some words to scotch tape his weak argument.
