Most importantly, start with one small section at a time, not a large section for the entire back, for example. More than a few players, even seasoned professionals, create quite a mess by trying to clean too large an area at a time. Whenever using a new brand of cleaner or polish for the first time, be sure to test it on a small, inconspicuous spot. Place approximately 10-15 drops of polish on a clean, folded cotton or microfiber cloth or clean soft folded paper towel. Using moderate pressure, rub polish onto varnish in a circular motion in 1" or larger circles. Wipe off polish before it has dried with another clean soft cloth or soft paper towel. Use light to moderate pressure either in a circular motion or in the direction of the grain.

Shar Cleaner results

Not the absolute best cleaner, but does a fairly good job of lifting most of the rosin residue off the instrument the first time. At least when I used it, it didn't lift off the varnish as well. May need to let it set awhile to work better or apply a second time.

A Great Cleaner!

I recently bought this cleaner. I called Shar first and was very concerned about using it on the varnish on my 100 year-old German violin. They said it would be safe. My local violin shop said they would clean my fiddle for me for a LOT OF DOUGH. So I carefully tested this cleaner on my instrument and was very happy with the results. It cleaned all the rosin and dirt and grime especially from around the chin rest, (Hey I play outside sometimes and I'm a sweaty guy). IT DID NOT damage or dull the finish in any way and left the wood very clean and shiny. I applied the cleaner sparingly with white paper towels and q-tips for the small tight places, and buffed the instrument with a dry white towel. I highly recommend this product BUT carefully test it on your instruments finish first.
