Camille Saint-Saëns: Havanaise, Op. 83 for Violin and Piano – Henle Urtext Edition

Camille Saint-Saëns had a gift for turning brilliant violin writing into music that feels  immediately memorable. Havanaise, Op. 83, is one of his most popular short concert works for violin, shaped by the distinctive rhythm and atmosphere of the habanera. It is said that Saint-Saëns was moved to write the main theme of his Havanaise by the crackling open fire at a hotel, while on tour in autumn 1885 with its subsequent dedicatee Rafael Diaz Albertini. With its graceful lyricism, sparkling virtuosity, and Spanish-Cuban dance character, this piece is an excellent choice for violinists looking for expressive Saint-Saëns sheet music with strong recital appeal.

This Henle Urtext edition presents Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise in a clear, reliable format for serious study and performance. We do not know whether, when writing the composition two years later, the Habanera, with its typical two beat dance rhythms, was an allusion to the Cuban origin of his violinist friend. At any rate, the composition was extremely well received from the very beginning both in its original form as well as in the orchestral version. This edition offers violinists and pianists a dependable score for recitals, competitions, conservatory study, advanced lessons, and concert preparation.

Edited by Christiane Strucken-Paland, this paperbound edition includes violin fingering and bowing by Ingolf Turban and piano fingering by Klaus Schilde. With both marked and unmarked string parts included, this Henle edition is a valuable choice for violinists, pianists, teachers, and collectors of Saint-Saëns sheet music.
