REVIEW VIDEOS

Pirastro Flexocore Deluxe Cello Strings are designed to fill a need. Concerned with the high price of strings for students, Pirastro instructed its designers to craft a less expensive set of strings that were still at a high professional level of quality. Flexocore Deluxe is the result.

Professional strings must have good playability and sound. You need warm and round A and D strings, and powerful G and C strings. Flexocore Deluxe has both, because the designers combined solid steel and chrome steel for the A and D strings, and tungsten and rope cores for the G and C.

It’s hard to make student-budget strings sound this good, but the effort was worth it. Flexocores are professional grade. And now, instead of using the same expensive cello strings for years and years, students can replace their worn-out strings when they need to. High quality at a reasonable price.

Great A String

I started using the Flexocore Deluxe A string over 2 years ago. I had tried many A strings through the years, trying to find one with a dark, rounded sound that did not become muddy sounding on the upper range (anything from the middle harmonic A on up). I even tried using the Eudoxa A, but the sound was poor, plus all of the problems that come with a gut string. I also tried the D’Addiro Pro Arte (nylon core), but that was even worse. I have Aricore D, G and C strings (nylon core) and they sound great, although there is some dullness in sound once you get above the middle harmonic. On top of that they are no longer being produced. The Flexocore paid well on with them, and I have used the Flexocore D and it sounds just like the Aricore D. I was disappointed with the Obligato (another nylon core string) when I tried them, this the search for something else.
In terms of sound quality the Flexocore A is on par with the more expensive Larson Il cannone warm & broad in terms of sound. Both offer a warmer, rounded sound, but because they are steel core, they have focus and clarity when moving above the middle harmonic. If I had to rank all of the A strings I have tried, it would be as follows:
1. Pirastro Flexocore Deluxe
2. Larsen up cannone warm & broad
3. Larsen soloist
4. Larsen (regular)
5. Pirastro Obligato
6. Jargar
7. Pirastro Passione
8. Pirastro Chromecor Plus

The only reason I put the Flexocore at the top over the Larsen I’ll cannone warm & broad is it has the same sound quality for a lower price. I am currently working on both the Faure Elegie Op. 24 and Paradis’ Sicilienne and found it produced a clear, warm tone going up to the highest notes involved in both pieces. It also performs well with different bow strokes from colle and Martel’s up to more aggressive styles like spicatto.
