REVIEW VIDEOS
This set of Three Duets is the first of five such collections composed by the prolific cellist and pedagogue Friedrich August Kummer (1797 - 1879). Born in Meiningen, Germany, into a musical family, he began music lessons on the oboe with his father, a renowned oboist, and began cello lessons with Friedrich Dotzauer when the family moved to Dresden after his father was appointed to the Chapel Royal orchestra. Kummer was soon able to join that ensemble as a cellist, after serving as an oboist for three years, he eventually succeeded Dotzauer as principal when his teacher retired. In 1856 he was appointed Professor of Cello at the Dresden Conservatoire where he taught until his death. Among his pupils were Bernhard Cossmann and Julius Goltermann. He was known for his study of several methods and technical studies still in use today. Kummer concertized throughout Europe and Scandinavia, appearing as a soloist and also as a chamber musician with his string quartet.
