The dark Hill rosin is just fine. It arrives quickly, as promised.
Hill Dark Rosin for Violin, Viola, and Cello
I can't comment with regard to using Hill Dark Rosin on cellos. When used on bows for viola and violin in winter time, heated buildings, it provides better "grip" than some other alternatives.
On bows of low quality, and with older bow hair, the high stickiness can also make sound "stronger". But this comes at a cost, Hill Dark does tend to build up on bow hair over time, and it is slightly more difficult to clean from the varnish on many instruments.
I use Hill Dark in Winter only, preferring lighter Rosins (such as Salchow) in other seasons. When you switch rosin types without doing a rehair, you do need to wash out the old rosin - very carefully.
I have used this rosin with my viola bow for a couple weeks. I am happy with the tone I get but wish that I didn't have to apply so many strokes to get the same contact grip as the dark rosin I used before. This rosin produces a very fine dust.
Bought as Christmas gift to go along with a new glarry violin kit,she played beautifully at our party.
