REVIEW VIDEOS

Antonín Dvorák wrote String Quintet in E Flat Major, Op. 97 together with the String Quartet in F major during the summer holidays of 1893 in Spillville, making these works the products of Dvorák's sojourn in America. Like the other works from this period, the Quintet in E flat major is also influenced by American musical idioms, pentatonics and African-American folklore. This title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonín Dvorák.

Great, Challenging Piece in a Beautiful Edition

This is a wonderful viola quintet from Dvorak's American series [along with the famous symphony and quartet, op. 95-98] with a lot of nice melodies, some from American folk songs. It's for advanced players: sections in extreme keys (7 flats, 5 sharps) and tricky rhythms. The viola II part is difficult for an intermediate violist such as myself. The edition is clear, accurate, and well edited, which I would expect from Barenreiter. This piece is from Barenreiter Prague, not Barenreiter Kassel, which explains why titles are given in Czech, as well as English and German.
