Croft, Dorothy - Violin Theory, Book One (Second Edition)

Violin Theory for Beginners is the result of many years of effort to teach music theory effectively in relation to the violin. Each lesson has been thoroughly tested, with students of all levels of ability, in an effort to determine the correct approach and the essential amount of repetition. The use of a blackboard cannot be too strongly stressed to insure complete understanding and to prevent mistakes in the written exercises at the end of each lesson. The teacher will need to determine how many exercises each child needs; however, the author uses all of them. This book is not intended to be an exclusive discourse; rather, it is meant to serve as a basis for the individuality and the ingenuity of the teacher.

The first volume begins by reviewing basic music notation, including the staff, treble clef, rests, time signatures, and more. Written exercises throughout the book reinforce lessons to engage the student in the material. The latter half of the volume is an overview of basic music theory, including major and minor scale and triads.

Developed by master string teacher Dorothy Croft to enhance the teaching of music theory in relation to the violin, this is a revised practical approach to teaching beginner violin. This book is followed by Violin Theory for Beginners, Volume 2.
