Barbara Barber's Scales for Advanced Violinists is more than just a scale book it’s a well-rounded practice tool for advancing and advanced violin players. In addition to presenting scales in all major and minor keys, the book integrates music theory into the scale routine. It begins with the circle of fifths, showing key relationships and chord functions within the key of C. Then, as each scale variation is presented, it is given a name: melodic minor, tonic major, diminished 7th, etc - teaching not just notes, but also their functions within the key.

Also provided are practice suggestions for the scales and arpeggios and for double-stops, including fingered octaves. A progress chart is printed in the beginning of the book to help the student keep track of scales mastered.

This edition is for solo violin. Written by Barbara Barber. Published by Preludio Music, Inc., distributed by Alfred Music Publishing.

Great!

The books arrived in a timely manner, and were in perfect condition. I was recommended to use this website because places like Amazon will mix up violin and viola books. I am so glad that I did! I will definitely use Shar Music for all of my purchases in the future.

Most excellent Abridgment

I am surprised nobody has rated this book! ALL the Suzuki teachers and many others use this to do preparation for college scholarship auditions! It is abridged from the Carl Flesh and also (in revision) the Galamian Scales - Take your pick! Barbara has
always produced amazing insites to teaching young string players - violinists, and violists. She has graced many Suzuki camps for years doing teacher training and I use THIS scale book as well as the Fingerboard Geography - another excellent book. You can't
go wrong with this. Students can use it straight through college or until their professors insist on the original versions of Carl Flesh or Galamian. But this is all one needs for a lifetime. It can be taught as early as Book 2 and 3 in Suzuki where we add
shifting to the music anyway. I LOVE this book - use no other.
