Bach, JS - Double Concerto in d minor, BWV 1043 - Two Violins and Piano - edited by Oistrakh - Edition Peters
REVIEW VIDEOS
The Concerto for Two Violins in d minor, BWV 1043 by J.S. Bach (also known as the Double Concerto) is a prime example of the late Baroque style. It exhibits Bach's utter command of counterpoint, with fugal sections and tight imitation between the two violins. For the violinists, it is simultaneously a solo work and a chamber work: both violinists take turns as the "soloist," but the scope of this music is so much bigger than the notion of "soloist" that it quickly becomes not two voices vying for prominence, but one voice with two parts. While all three movements are rich in melody, harmony, and texture, the sublime second movement may be, in this writer's opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed. An indispensable work for any violinist!
This edition for two violins with piano reduction is edited by David Oistrakh, with piano reduction by Wilhelm Weismann. Published by Edition Peters.
