Leopold Auer’s Twelve Characteristic Preludes, in the Form of Melodious Studies for Violin, Op. 9 are tailored for violinists who already fluently play at an advanced level. Auer’s treatment of each covered playing technique often corresponds to the depth with which it is explored in such studies as the Carl Flesch Urstudien [Basic Studies] and the D. C. Dounis Daily Dozen and Artist’s Technique of Violin Playing, but, as the Op. 9 subtitle indicates, it is placed in a more musically oriented, satisfying-to-practice context. These studies are particularly excellent for detailed practice of essential advanced playing tools, but they are also effective for sharpening already developed playing skills in preparation for professional level concert performance. Hence, the purpose of this publication is to make available a practical modern edition of an outstanding but long unavailable, too widely neglected set of technical studies by one of history’s most famous teachers of artist-violinists.
