I Love My Scales (in Small Bites)
by Karen Khanagov

Especially for beginners!

Violinist Karén Khanagov holds masters degrees from both Azerbaijan State Conservatory and the University of Oklahoma. After becoming a refugee, he eventually settled in Oklahoma City, where he currently serves on faculty at Oklahoma City University. As a freelance violinist, he also records, composes, and arranges.

An active and prolific music publisher, Karén Khanagov has created a series of books for every level of string player. With appealing and accessible melodies, progressively more challenging passagework, and practice hints, the entire range of books are written as a skilled teacher would present them, and will appeal to serious player, from beginner to professional.

Unique among scale books, with an included play along practice CD, to help reinforce listening skills and intonation. The goal of I Love My Scales is simple: to help the young student to master their scales, so that playing the violin “will make people happy!”

Note: This book is printed with four different covers, as shown in the images on this page. The book that is shipped will be selected at random, so no specific cover is guaranteed.

Great Scale Book

This is a great scale book! It really helped my son improve his fingerings and tuning. The accompaniment CD was very helpful for my son when practice his fingerings and speed.

My daughter started violin at 4 and now 8 years later we still realize how imperative basics are.....scales! She used this scale book religiously. The progression of the scale lessons is very easy to follow and builds nicely. It introduces scales and scale building in a fun way so it does not overwhelm a beginner and it's very easy to follow and understand. It is a great aid to encourage daily scale practice. Different bowing techniques can be practiced while playing the scales and the piano CD is a great built-in metronome. This scale book is a MUST!

Scales played on piano not violin

I purchased a book specifically for scales for violin to practice intonation with a violin not to play with a piano. Disappointed as I have many similar books.

Who knew scales could sound beautiful

We have 4 children between ages of 8 and 10 who have used this book and I'll never forget their expressions the first time they played with the piano accompaniment. Their eyes opened wide because it was beautiful! It made them sound like they were performing a formal piece and it certainly made a routine building block of practice more fun. I think it is a good thing that they are not playing along with another violin because it trains their ears to auto-tune to the accompaniment, which seems more practical and useful for playing in ensembles later.

Great scale practice book

We have this book and I could not say more about how good it is for practicing scales. The accompaniment CD is excellent for ear training and for ease of use. I don't play any instruments so helping my children with their practice is difficult for me. Having a book and CD that they can easily use themselves has made things much easier for me. Thank to Karen Khanagov for this great resource.

A powerful resource for young violinists and their teachers!

This wonderful book from this significant pedagogue should be a staple for all teachers of young violinists. It is a fun way to learn scales and the accompanying CD is helpful to the learner. Congrats to Mr. Khanagov for his superb contribution to the advancement of young violinists.

This book is a must-have for any young musician who wants to develop essential skills in music. Scales are the foundation for great technique. My daughter developed perfect pitch by using this system. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning music.

Great Scale Starter

This is the only book I use to start my students on scales. They start out with one octave and end up with two octave scales. There are arpeggios and introduction to Dorian and Lydian modes. There are also multiple rhythms throughout. There are even some technique-building exercises at the end; all designed for beginners. There is a wonderful piano accompaniment on CD that goes along with it. Much is accomplished with this accompaniment. First, the student will play with good intonation having to match the piano. Second, they will learn to play with a steady tempo, since the pianist has aligned it with a metronome beat (you will hear the metronome beat only at the beginning as a preparation). Then you will hear 4 quarter note beats on the piano as preparation measure. And lastly it feels like youíre playing musical pieces because of the piano accompaniment. This has made playing scales fun for all of my students. I began using this book a few years ago and since then, over 20 of my students have been working through it with much success. After this book and some shifting exercises, they are ready for Galamian scale system. I am always hunting for good beginner scale books and this one is definitely the best one out there. It is certainly one of a kind. Thank you Karen Khanagov for your wonderfully written and much-needed contribution to violinists.
