W.E. Hill & Sons Violin Bow
Gold and Tortoiseshell Mounts | Unique Diamond Inlay | c.1905
This exquisite violin bow represents the pinnacle of English bow-making at the turn of the 20th century, crafted at the W.E. Hill & Sons workshop during its golden era. Mounted in richly figured tortoiseshell and finely chased gold, the bow bears a singular distinction: a one-of-a-kind diamond inlay set in gold, embedded into the frog—a feature not documented in standard Hill production and likely made to private commission.
The octagonal stick is of dark red-brown pernambuco, impeccably balanced and responsive, demonstrating the refined strength and elegance characteristic of Hill bows of this period. The craftsmanship and stylistic details suggest the hand of either William Richard Retford or William Johnston, two of the most skilled Hill craftsmen working during this period, both known for their exceptional finishing and bespoke commissions.
With its distinguished aesthetics and refined playability, this bow not only exemplifies the artistry of Hill’s finest makers but also stands as a singular piece of decorative and historical importance. A true collector's treasure, unmatched in rarity and elegance.
