The back is of one piece of medium flamed maple. The ribs and scroll are of similar maple. The top is of two pieces of spruce cut on the quarter of fine width grain widening slightly at the flanks. The varnish is orange-brown over a golden ground.
Samuel “Luthier” Rosenthal began his studies with his father, Joseph Rosenthal in 1901. After emigrating to the US in 1906, he began performing repairs for Wurlitzer while continuing to make new instruments at home. Rosenthal established his shop in New York in 1918 where he crafted over 100 violins.
