Barenreiter
Beethoven, Ludwig van - Sonata for Pianoforte and Violoncello A major op. 69
REVIEW VIDEOS
This Urtext Barenreiter edition has been edited by Jonathan Del Mar.
Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major, Opus 69 was revolutionary when it was composed in 1808 for a number of reasons. Most evidently, the cello is without a doubt the solo instrument, while prior to this piece, sonatas were generally composed for piano with instrumental accompaniment. Here, the cello introduces the first theme completely solo, and following themes are expressed as a conversation between the two instruments. The first movement is slower than typical, followed by an unexpectedly fast second movement and then again a very slow introduction to the lively final movement.
