Henry Schradieck dedicated his Op. 1 "in grateful memory" to his teacher Hubert Leonard, who had taught him from age 8 to 11 at the conservatory in Brussels. These studies follow the circle of fifths and proceed through all 24 major and minor keys. These etudes are character pieces whose compelling muscial expression derives chiefly from harmonic progressions and expressive melodies, while rhythmic complexity is kept relatively simple for the sake of effective practice.
