David Burgess (b. 1953) began working at a violin shop at age fourteen — at age eighteen, he went to work at the Weisshaar shop, performing repairs and restoration work. David also  worked for Shar Music for a time, performing restorations and new making. Before the age of thirty, Burgess had won fourteen Gold Medals and First Place awards for his instruments in major competitions conducted in Italy, Germany, and the United States. He was subsequently barred from entering two more competitions, by virtue of his wildly acknowledged excellence. Burgess has since served as judge for several major making competitions and taught and served as program director for the Oberlin College/Violin Society of America stringed instrument program.
