DB 90

I use the DB 90 all the time when I practice. I like the voice option that helps me stay on the beat. I would however recommend the optional AC adapter and not depend on the batteries

Major disappointment

Bought this in December for my daughter and it's not working. Called the manufacturer's customer service. They want $25 just to look at it and $80 an hour for repairs.Their guarantee is only for 3 months for labor, 6 months for parts.
I've heard it's a great product, but at that price it should work longer than 6 months!

Eats batteries!

My daughter (the musician) seems satisfied with the product. Lots of features. They seems to work.
I, however, would like to call your attention to the fact that the documentation states that you can expect a pathetic 6 hours of service from an alkaline 9v battery. Our experience suggests that this is too optimistic. When the battery runs down, the device shuts off (if you're lucky). Or it just starts behaving erratically. Very erratically. Our previous metronome (far fewer functions) got twenty times the service out of two tiny triple-A batteries. Hire some better engineers, Boss!

I shelled out the $159 for the DB90 after a year suffering with the Intelli Programmable Metronome (which I've reviewed on this site), and despite its wallet-lightening price tag, this metronome is a great value. Every professional orchestral percussionist I know uses either this model, or my personal favorite, the DB66. This is for two primary reasons. First, the highest volume setting on the DB90 is ear-splittingly loud (perfect for practicing Berio/Wagner/Bartok/etc, or using in a chamber music setting), far surpassing any I have tried. Secondly, the ability to program in changing meters/tempi is extraordinarily helpful, especially when dissecting contemporary music. Only two aspects of the DB90 could use improvement: 1) This is a very large metronome and will take up quite a bit of space in your case/bag, and 2) the "case" that comes with the DB90 is a pleather-like open top envelope with no clasp that will do little more than keep it from getting scratched (if it stays in there at all). These are small inconveniences for what is otherwise a great piece of equipment.

The Voice

What distinguishes this metronome from others )as far as I know( is the option of the human )synthesized( voice counting out loud - not only 1-2-3, but 1-and-2-and, 1-and -a, 2-and-a etc. For professionals working on difficult subdivisions it is especially helpful, and for students who cant keep track of the number of beats in a measure it is invaluable. The down side of this option is that the sound of the voice is a caricature of your worst nagging martinet of a teacher....Yet my students get a big kick out of it when I bring her out at lessons!
