About This Item

This collection of Mendelssohn string quartets would be truly complete but for his very first string quartet in E-flat major, which he composed in 1823, when he was just 14. Since this work was never published during Mendelssohn's lifetime, it was not assigned an opus number, and is not generally well-known. The works included in this volume consist of Op. 12, 13, the three quartets from Op. 44, and Op. 80, as well as the Four Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 81.

This edition contains parts for two violins, viola, and cello (no score). Published by Edition Peters.
