About This Item

This violin, labeled Prof. F. J. Koch/Dresden, 1924, is a typical example of the maker’s work. This violin has outstanding projection, with a balanced and very pure tone. High-arched pattern, in the style of Klotz, with two-piece narrowly flamed maple back, and medium grained spruce top. Dark red-brown shaded varnish over a golden ground. This violin has a very open, rich and dark sound, emphasizing lower to mid-range overtones. Original certificate from maker.

Professor Franz Joseph Koch worked in Dresden Germany in the early part of the 20th century. He was both a physicist and musician, combining the two fields into his passion in discovering the secrets of the Cremonese sound. He concluded from his research and testing that the Cremonese masters achieved their great sound because they treated the wood with a resin that rendered uniformity to the wood, allowing deeper and more resonant tone to emerge. He developed his own resin treatment, which led to the production of a line of “Homogeneous Stringed Instruments”, which were claimed to be similar to Cremonese instruments.
