Jordan Hess Viola Salt Lake City 2016

Based on a classic Guadagnini foundation, this powerful and responsive 16 inch viola was made by Jordan Hess in 2016. It possesses a balanced tone and spectrum, which will be appreciated by the violist seeking a musically versatile instrument, yet has the power and projection to fill a hall. Two piece maple back with fine grain and minimal flaming, typical of an original Guadagnini. The top is of medium to wide grain, very well defined, with a natural wood imperfection that lends additional charm. Aesthetically, this viola looks old, with very skilled antiquing, visible toolmarks, and careful varnish application. The varnish is deep red over a golden ground, with top layers removed in places, as an authentic Guadagnini may look today. This is a most impressive work that simply exudes bold character at every level.

Jordan Hess is a young maker working in Salt Lake City, Utah. His early training was in his native Indianapolis, working with a well-known shop at a very early age. More formal training took place at the Violin Making School of America, in Salt Lake City, under Charles Woolf, Aubrey K Alexander and Sanghoon Lee. He went to work immediately afterward at the shop of John Young. Today, he heads his own workshop in Salt Lake City.

Hess models his instruments on the works of the Cremonese masters, but he is not a slave to duplicating them. Instead, he has carefully studied the very origins and roots of the masters, capturing the best of their work not by copying, but by adhering to very intricate standards. With a passion in acoustics and geometry, Hess has developed his own patterns based on geometric principles, interpretations of the great masters of the past, but with the foundation of modern scientific principles applied. Using this uncompromising approach, every piece of wood is subject to the same analysis, before it is selected to become a Jordan Hess instrument.
