Bronek Cison Viola Chicago 16 3/8

A Tertis pattern viola created in 2006, with a big cello-like sound, by the well known Chicago maker Bronek Cison. The top bouts are narrower than more traditional violas, for easy access for the left hand when playing high positions. The lower bout is larger than standard pattern violas, compensating for the smaller upper bouts, thereby retaining the big viola sound. The back is of one piece of highly flamed maple, with undulating swirls. The top is of medium grained spruce, widening at the flanks. Carefully shaded varnish is red-brown over a golden ground.

Master luthier Bronek Sison received his training from luthier Andrzej Bednarski, in his native Poland. After ten years at the head of his own workshop, he was invited to join the master makers at the well known William Harris Lee shop, where he has gained an international reputation while helping the William Harris Lee shop attain its prominence.
