Question By:
MALCOLM MASTELLER
From PLEASANT GROVE, UT

Asked On: 08/07/2017

What effect on sound does this carbon fiber tailpiece have compared to ebony, plastic or metal?

SHAR Answer:

Hello Malcolm, thank you for your question! The most tone-related functions of a tailpiece is the way it is set up to allow for proper string after-length, and to be of good quality to promote intonation and reduce rattling (which can happen with fine tuners sometimes). The material will likely have little effect on tone, but is rather a preference for appearance, cost effectiveness, and durability. On very high-end instruments, we recommend proper wooden tailpieces (ebony, rosewood, boxwood) expertly installed with only a small Hill-style E-string adjuster. Though, if you want fine tuners on all strings (advised if you use steel-core strings) this would be an excellent choice, as lever-style fine tuners added to a wooden tailpiece can reduce the after-length by too much.
