Question by:

  • JIM PORTWOOD
  • JACKSONVILLE, FL

Asked On: 07/11/2017

Does resin get "old"? I've had this small cake of resin for several years. What do you think? Regards. Jimmy

SHAR Answer:

Hi Jim, thanks for your question. Most rosin will last for many years. Although, temperature fluctuations can affect the lifespan. The composition of the rosin will change over time causing it to soften/harden, crack, or reduce/increase in stickiness. If you notice a change in consistency or just want to experiment with a new brand, we recommend trying a new rosin. If you have questions about any specific rosins, please feel free to contact us directly at 1-800-248-7427.

  • POPULAR SHAR STAFF QUESTION
  • ANN ARBOR, MI

Asked On: 06/21/2016

Which kind of rosin would be best for a beginner violinist or violist? Light or Dark?

SHAR Answer:

It’s really a matter of personal preference. If you're a violinist, you're probably going to use a light rosin. “Light” rosin is amber colored and preferred by most violinists. “Dark” rosin is a deep jade color and tends to be preferred by violists and cellists. However, you don’t have to stick to this generalization. Dark rosin is stickier than light rosin, so it is usually a better choice in arid environments. It is also less likely to crack in the winter. If I were a beginner, I would choose a light rosin and see if you like it!
