A pupil of his father, William Forster II, William Forster III worked in London modeling his instruments predominantly on Amati and Stradivari. Forster III crafted instruments from 1779 until his death in 1824 favoring a brownish red varnish and producing instruments which offer a sweet, sonorous, and response tone. This viola from William Forster III is a fine example of the maker's work, offering the professional violist a part of England's long standing violin making tradition. Inked Wm Forster, 1801 above the end button, this viola made at the turn of the 19th century produces a sweet and full tone that is equally at home in a quartet or leading a concerto.
