Vieuxtemps' Sonata op. 36 has been a favorite of the viola reperoire ever since its 1861 premiere in London. It combines musical depth with elegance, virtuosity and sensuous finesse. The contrasting sections of this colorful music gives the performer a splendid opportunity to display a wide range of emotions: the slow diginified opening leads into an exciting Allegro; the dreamy lyricism of the Barcarolla contrasts with the fiery humor of the sparkling finale.
