Polish-American pianist and composer Leopold Godowsky waswidely known for his technical virtuosity, once prompting the famous ArthurRubinstein to remark, It would take me 500 years to get a mechanism likeGodowsky's!" He wrote most of his worksfor solo piano, but the 15 works in this collection were either transcribed bythe composer himself, or recomposed for violin and piano based on originalworks for piano. Appropriatelyvirtuosic, many involve advanced techniques like double-stops and extendedpassages on one string. The Twelve Impressions were dedicated toFritz and Harriet Kreisler, and have been fingered and phrased byKreisler. The three other pieces in thebook have been fingered and phrased by Godowsky’s son, the violinist LeopoldGodowsky, Jr. Published by Carl Fischer.
