Twenty-three years and four more works for violin and piano separate William Bolcom's two violin sonatas. The Second Sonata, premiered in 1979 by Sergiu Luca on violin and the composer at the piano, pays homage to the great jazz violinist Joe Venuti, whom Bolcom greatly admired. Though the jazz influence is not overt until the final movement, the overall feel of the work should reflect both the improvisatory, laid-back nature of jazz, and the virtuosity of great players like Venuti. The sonata alternates between moments of subtle "blues vibe" and explosive energy.
