These enjoyable, well stylized hymn arrangements include a few tricky skills for the performer to master. There's also plenty of room to develop flair and work in one's own ideas. Because they are unaccompanied, Carlson's hymn tunes are invaluable for church services, recitals, or living room performances. "Have violin, will play." I recommend them for all my advancing students who enjoy hymns.

Some of the arrangements are quite nice, but after a while it becomes clear that the arranger is a math teacher. You see the same formula throughout: theme, basic eighth note variations (maybe 16th notes if you're lucky), key change, end. It works for some songs, but it gets old on most. I did enjoy a few of them, but was disappointed with the predictability.
