About This Item

This collection of 14 folk songs is ideal for the intermediate beginner. The book opens with a brief history of folk music and fiddling, then it encourages the player to add ornamentation to each piece once it has been learned. The notation is larger than standard engraving, but a little smaller than the beginning violin books by Avsharian, allowing for longer pieces and more illustration. All selections can be played in first position with no lowered or raised fingers. However, some songs have a recommendation for third position at the bottom and no fingerings are specified. All are in the key of A, D, G, and C and no sixteenth notes are used, but some bowings and rhythms might be new to beginners. There is included a one page lesson and worksheet on second, third, and fifth intervals that is on par with the level of playing in the book. Each song includes an illustration and fills one page. Titles: On Top of Old Smokey, Oh Suzanna, Oh Dear!, Comin’ Round the Mountain, This Old Man, Billy Boy, Camptown Races, Reveille, John Brown, Clementine, Michael Row Your Boat, Got the Whole World, and The Farmer in the Dell. 16 pages.
