About This Item

The Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40, by Johannes Brahms is a chamber piece in four movements written for natural horn, violin, and piano. Composed in 1865, the work commemorates the death of Brahms' mother, Christiane, earlier that year. Brahms deviates from classical practice by adopting a slow-fast-slow-fast order of movements, perhaps looking back to the old sonata da chiesa form. The Adagio is said to be one of Brahms most impassioned and heartfelt slow movements. The Horn part has been transcribed for both Viola and Cello and may be played on either.

This edition contains the full score and parts for Violin, Horn in E flat, Viola (sub for horn) and Cello (sub for horn). Published by Edition Peters

Question By:
HOWARD LYON
From ERIE, PA

Asked On: 09/22/2017

Just Checking. Shar catalogue listing is for Violin, Viola/Cello and piano. Pictured cover is for Violin Waldhorn, and piano. My (worn-out and now discarded) Peters ed. had Violin part, Piano score part, and a choice of horn, viola or cello on the third part ... a total of five parts. Does the Shar product include the horn part for sure? This is the sort of thing that's difficult to fit into headings, so if someone does a physical check, and tells me it does include a horn part, I'll order it within five minutes of finding the answer. Thanks, Howard

SHAR Answer:

Hello Howard! Yes, this item includes a violin part, viola part, cello part, E-flat horn part, and piano score. We will update the item description to show these included parts. Thank you for your question!

Question By:
DANIEL CRANE
From VANCOUVER, WA

Asked On: 07/27/2017

It is a little unclear whether this edition contains the original instrumentation (violin, horn, and piano), or is strictly the arrangement of violin, viola/cello, and piano. Can you clarify so I don't find myself with the wrong version?

SHAR Answer:

Hi Daniel! This edition includes the original instrumentation score (Piano, Violin, and Horn) and individual parts (Violin, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Horn). The Horn part has been transcribed for both Viola and Cello and may be played on either. Hope this helps!
