Bartók's String Quartet No. 4 exhibits an unusual structure, albeit one the composer used more than once: sometimes described as an "arch" format, the first and last of the five movements are related, as are the second and fourth, but the third (middle) movement is thematically unique - an island inside the expanse of the quartet. Like many of Bartók's other works, the piece calls for certain extended techniques, such as the Bartók pizzicato.
