choosing a Bach viola transcription
Of the two editions of the 6 Sonatas and Partitas transcribed for Viola available, this Ricordi Edition is cleaner and follows the original (violin) manuscript.
There are no added dynamics and the note values in double stops and chords remain unchanged. My only complaint is in the typesetting of 3- and 4-note chords.
Rather than put multiple note heads on one stem, or perhaps use two stems to indicate the leading voice, each note in a chord gets its own stem. This necessitates the notes to be offset so their stems (and flags) don't overlap. Some notes in a 4-note chord are offset by more than the width of a note head, making already-tricky passages harder to read.
This edition would be better for players somewhat familiar with the Partitas and Sonatas. For those looking for additional guidance interpreting the music, I suggest the International edition.
