Edvard Grieg's Sonata for Cello and Piano in A minor is above all else expressive. Starting tempestuously, the first movement soon gives way to a lyrical and distinctly Norwegian theme -- the remainder of the movement is spent reconciling the two contrasting themes. The second movement on the other hand is purely melodic, once again reminiscent of Norwegian folk music. Finally, the sonata is concluded by a vigorous and exciting Allegro movement that, for once, features the piano as much as the cello.
