Elliott Carter composed his Cello Concerto in 2001, at the age of 93. The piece starts with the soloist alone, with the orchestra punctuating the ideas the soloist is presenting. These ideas are expanded into the themes in the following movements. Carter states, "In this score I have tried to find meaningful, personal ways of revealing the cello's vast array of wonderful possibilities."
