Introduced in the 1930's, the Blackwing quickly became the favorite of novelist John Steinbeck, animator Chuck Jones, and composers Stephen Sondheim and Quincey Jones. Discontinued in the 1990's, Blackwing pencils were reintroduced in 2010 by American company California Cedar's Palamino pencil division. Made to Palamino's specs by Japan's finest art pencil manufacturer, and using strong and straight Incense Cedar logs harvested in the US, assembly is completed by Palamino. The graphite is Japanese, with a blend of clay, for a smooth, sensuous feel. Each Palamino has a unique metal ferrule that holds a long wide eraser and clip - when the eraser wears down, simply remove the clip, pull eraser out a little, and reinstall. Replacement erasers are available, to assure that your Blackwing eraser lasts as long as its pencil! Musicians and artists will prefer the Blackwing for a soft, smooth performance. Writers and everyday users will prefer the Blackwing 602, for a firmer line.

excellent pencils

I just received these pencils today and I can immediately see the difference between Palomino Blackwing pencils and other wooden pencils. These pencils write very smoothly. The graphite is very soft and dark. However, the eraser are black, not pink, as shown in the picture.

Palomino Blackwing 602

I have always heard great comments about these pencils online. This is the first time I've bought them and I immediately see the difference. These pencils don't smear like others and write very clearly. The wide eraser is also very handy and can be replaced.

The modern writing standard

The Blackwing 602, whether you're talking about the original Eberhard Faber iteration or this reincarnation by Palomino, is the standard by which all other pencils seem to be measured these days. This is not without good reason. These pencils strike a fantastic balance between dark, clear marking and reasonable point-retention. they're quite pricey, considering you could just walk into any store and get a box of 24 yellow pencils for a couple bucks, but you would quickly find out they don't compare in terms of performance. I was very happy to find these listed for the old sale price, on top of a 20% off sale. I bought two boxes for just over the price of one box straight from Palomino. Way to go, Shar!
