You may have heard of Scott Cao, but do you know his story? It's an American story. It's a story of talent, hard work, a fusion of cultures, and a collaboration of artists and musicians. Like so many other American stories, this one begins overseas and ends in the land of opportunity. Born in China, Scott Shu-Kun Cao learned violinmaking in the 1970s and eager for new challenges, moved to the United States in 1985. Mr. Cao refined his craft under the mentoring of great makers and restorers Luis Bellini, Hans Weisshaar, and Roland Feller, and began winning awards and acclaim quickly. He became a U.S. citizen in 1989, and for the past twenty years has raised a family and run his violinmaking studio in California.

When we visited Mr. Cao at his studio in Campbell, south of San Francisco, last year, we were immediately impressed by the fantastic playing qualities of his violins. He has won awards for tone and workmanship worldwide including medals at the VSA International Competitions in 1986, 1988, 1992, and 1996 and the 7th International Stradivari Triennial in Cremona in 1994. Scott Cao's personally made instruments are owned and played by renowned concert artists such as Gidon Kremer, Nigel Kennedy, Youji Lin, and Bin Huang, as well as other professional musicians throughout America, Europe, and Asia.

Not only a fine maker, Scott Cao is a tireless teacher who has trained many young makers in the centuries-old Italian traditions, and employs a handful of very talented makers in his California studio. These luthiers produce wonderful sounding violins, made in America, at musician-friendly prices.

We invite you to try these violins by Scott Cao and his Campbell Studio. It's a story we're happy to be a part of, and one that will last as long as their instruments - and the musicians who play them.
