I just got my Cricket violin. I'd been intrigued with it for a while and thought I'd take a chance on a radically re-engineered instrument. So here's what I love and what I don't love so much: Love the Idea—I really love the idea of a light, rugged, flexible, super-portable fiddle that won't break the bank, for outside, for traveling, and for non-traditional venues. Love to Play it—It is super-easy and fun to play. It's light as a feather and responds instantly to the bow and to the left hand. I am really, really enjoying playing this thing! Love the Build Quality, Design, and Style—Ukulele-style friction pegs are really easier to tune than traditional wooden violin pegs. I don't know why anyone would bother with the geared pegs because it's already easy to tune. All the parts seem quality, including the plastic body. It's cute and nicely put together. Don't Love so Much: The somewhat weird tone (though I have to say, it's growing on me). The tone is kind of hollow, like you might get when you talk into your cupped hands. The G string is not full and heavy. (Hey, no bass-bar, and a highly truncated plastic body—what do you expect?) I find the tone suitable for jazz, bluegrass, and folk. For classical, maybe not so much. I wouldn't want to sit in a string section and try to blend in, nor would I want to use the Cricket for the big recital. I've read that the Cricket amplifies beautifully, but in the acoustic mode, be prepared for a non-traditional, but strangely compelling sound. Don't Love so Much: Gig bag design with the thingie you strap over the bridge so it doesn't get smushed. The Cricket really needs a well-designed hard case. Don't Love so Much: The integrated shoulder/chin rest. The design could be improved a bit. It's almost there, but could use a bit more flexibility in adjustment. The verdict: I'm really glad I got the Cricket. I really love the way it plays. I love it's weirdly cool vibe. It won't replace my good violin, but it will be super fun to take to jams, picnics, camping, etc. Nice price and I love that it's made right up in New England!
