Sofia Vettori Violin - Florence, 2016

In Stock

A fine example of the work of this young master, and a tribute to Guarneri del Gesu, this beautiful violin simply exudes character. Big, expressive sound, very suitable for the soloist, with impressive projection. Well-balanced across the tonal spectrum. Complex sound, with multiple layers of tonal colors.

The back is of two pieces of very old maple, with pronounced flaming descending from the center seam. The top is of beautifully grained spruce, straight from the top to the lower third, where the grain playfully flares out. Old style antique varnish, in deep brown with red-yellow hues, over a golden ground.

Third generation luthier Sofia Vettori creates her violins in the Vettori family’s workshop in Florence, Italy, joining her father and brothers. Studying the violin from an early age, Sofia is today both a professional violinist and skilled luthier, having received her education at the Cherubini Conservatory and the Mascagni Conservatory. Her work is informed by her experience as a violinist as well as the rich environment of the Tuscan region where she grew up and lives. With a deep respect, appreciation and knowledge of fine antiquities, Sofia Vettori strives to create work that reflects the greatness of a bygone era. To this end, she selects very old wood, often emulates the work of Guarneri del Gesu, and has perfected a varnish formulation and application technique that beautifully integrates with the spirit of her work.

The Vettori Family Workshop
Paolo Vettori has lived his entire life in and near the Tuscan city of Florence, Italy, the heart and soul of Italian art and culture and birthplace of the European Renaissance. Receiving his early training from his father Dario Vettori, Paolo started working in his father’s workshop at a very young age. He was fortunate to interact with many great makers in the region who greatly supplemented his training, among them Sderci, Casini and Stefanini, who provided a direct line of inspiration to Paolo from Bisiach. From these masters, Paolo acquired not just new knowledge of techniques, but their approach to making, varnishing, and in some cases, even their tools and molds. Especially notable is the superb spruce employed in Vettori’s works, which originates from the Apennines, and was felled in 1772. The age and provenance of the wood is guaranteed and certified by Tuscia University.

Applying these resources, Paolo Vettori has created over 300 instruments, and remains today the head of his family’s workshop. He has since been joined by his children, who have become notable and respected luthiers in their own right, carrying out the Vettori family tradition into the third generation: Dario II, Sofia and Lapo, each of whom label their works individually.

Gwendolyn Masin is one of today's significant concert violinists. She is regarded as "a formidable talent that demands attention" (The Irish Times), "appearing to merge with her instrument and in so doing, enchanting her audience" (Thuner Tagblatt). She is celebrated for "setting first-rate standards in concert performance with her technically superior, refined, intensive and richly contrasting expression" (Der Bund). Masin is descendant of a lineage of classically-trained musicians and remembers playing violin as naturally as having a conversation when she was a child. Her family, imbued with musical insight, helped her to avoid "the pitfalls of child prodigy status" (Figaro.hu). Her formative years were shaped by musical instruction, world travel, performing for audiences in reputable concert halls, and collecting accolades internationally – all by the age of five. At eleven she gained national exposure in Ireland after appearing on The Late Late Show. She has been a regular guest on TV and radio shows and has performed throughout Europe, Russia, South Africa, the Middle East, and North America. ORIGIN is a collection of the cultures, music, traditions and heritage which have shaped Gwendolyn Masin's life and talents. As the descendant in a lineage of musicians from Central and Eastern Europe, the young violinist grew up surrounded by music. She evolved as a player alongside the students of her parents who are founders of a school for gifted young string instrumentalists as well as violinists themselves. Dubbed a prodigy, Gwendolyn performed around the globe and in this way, was exposed to the music and arts of many cultures and places. The maturations of Gwendolyn from childhood prodigy to professional musician was synergistic - a player shepherding her heritage and multicultural background into the ever-changing world of classical music and traditional folk pieces. In her search for own identity, music appears to have found Gwendolyn. She arrived at her present moment, shaped by her experiences, with a unique mind, perspective and string artistic sensibilities.
