About This Item

A very nicely made French violin from the early 20th century, labeled “Bernardel…a Paris…1868”. This violin is decidedly a soloist’s instrument: Very powerful, exceptional projection, perfectly balanced between treble and bass, with a sumptuous and resonant sound.

The back is of two pieces of quarter-sawn maple, of well-defined medium flame, descending from the center joint. Straight-grained spruce top of narrow width grain. The varnish is deep red-brown over a golden ground, with a well-maintained French polish.
