About This Item

A modern Stradivari model violin in outstanding condition, from the respected American maker and restorer, Erwin Hertel. Perfectly balanced tonal spectrum and fine dynamic range make this violin, perhaps, ideal for a busy musician performing in orchestra, chamber music and recital situations. The back is of one piece of maple of well defined medium width flame, ascending markedly from treble to bass side. The top is of straight grained spruce of medium width. The varnish is in the modern Italian style, red-orange over an amber ground.

Born in Germany in 1911, Erwin Hertel settled in the United States at just 22 years of age, after his student years at the violin making school in Mittenwald. First living in Philadelphia, where he established his career, he later relocated to New York City, working alongside Sacconi. There, his outstanding reputation was cemented among the finest and most famous players, who would take their violins to no others. Moving his workshop to Long Island, then finishing his career in Pittsburgh, Hertel is fondly remembered to this day. He passed in 1983.
