About This Item

Recommended for Beginners trying violin to see if they like it. An affordable alternative to a V.S.O. "Violin Shaped Object" that hinders new players success and discourages them from continuing.

As any teacher will tell you, a violin for a beginning student must function flawlessly and play with ease, producing a pleasant sound. The Amadeus does just that and has gone through a three step quality inspection process before you receive it.

Visually appealing, the Amadeus is made of quality maple, spruce and ebony. The hand feel is very smooth, and the sound is enhanced by Overture Premium strings and a carbon fiber tailpiece with 4 built-in fine tuners. The bridge is accurately carved, and the pegs turn smoothly. Made in China, inspected in our Ann Arbor workshop. Available in 4/4 - 1/16 sizes.

This Franz Hoffmann violin does not come with any accessories, it is the violin only. Most players purchase an outfit to start which includes a case, bow, and rosin, all of which are needed to begin playing. You can find an outfit here.

Oh, no! I broke a string! What should I do? Will this damage my instrument?

SHAR Answer:

No worries, it’s okay! This definitely happens now and then and it’s nothing to be too worried about. Unless all four strings broke at the same time (highly unlikely) and the bridge completely collapsed, it’s unlikely that there is any damage at all to your instrument. If it’s just simply one string that broke, then you’ll just need to purchase a new one and install it.

Unfortunately, broken strings cannot be repaired. They need to be replaced if they are broken. You can usually find them at a local violin shop. You can buy an individual string (only the A string, for example), if that's the one that's broken, or we also sell strings in a set of all four strings (E, A, D & G for violin and A,D,G & C for viola and cello). We sell a wide variety of brands of strings here at Shar--you can order them here online or over the phone. Our customer care representatives can help you place an order for new strings at 800.248.7427.

It's fairly uncommon for strings to just randomly snap. This is more likely to happen if the strings are older, worn out, or not in good condition. That’s why it’s a good idea to replace your strings periodically (their longevity will depend on how much you play) and keep your strings/instrument in proper condition. It’s also a good idea to purchase and keep an extra set of strings handy in your case, just in case a string breaks right before a lesson or performance and you need to replace it.

What is the minimum that I should look for in a beginner’s violin or viola?

SHAR Answer:

When you buy a beginner's violin or viola, it's a good idea to be aware of its materials, set-up and durability. You'll want the instrument to be made from a solid spruce top and to have maple wood used for its back, neck, and sides. It ought to have real ebony fittings, for durability, and it's ideal to have pegs and fine tuners that are easy to turn and don’t slip. Most importantly, you'll want your violin or viola to meet the proper measurements/specifications and set-up, just like all of the instruments we carry here at SHAR! If the instrument has the proper specifications and set-up, then you will be equipped to succeed at learning the violin or viola. That will help minimize frustration and maximize the enjoyment of learning.
