This bold viola is precisely made, with fine wood selection. The back is of two pieces of quarter sawn maple of medium width flame. The top is of spruce with straight grain of varied width. Carefully applied amber varnish over a golden ground, a departure from this maker’s usual intense orange/red varnish.

Renowned French maker Amédée Dieudonné, born 1890, established his shop in Mirecourt circa 1920. He received his training in Brussels with Gustave Bazin. Dieudonné made many replica instruments that were artfully executed. His successful workshop employed a number of master makers that Dieudonné himself trained, including Charles Bazin, Rambert Wurlitzer, William Monig, Etienne Vatelot and Jean Striebig.
